PostSubject: Pavlik Takes Out Taylor in 7!   Mon 01 Oct 2007, 1:25 am

In a classic Middleweight title bout, #1 contender Kelly ‘The Ghost’ Pavlik (32-0, 29 KOs) brutally knocked out champion Jermain ‘Bad Intentions’ Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KOs) in seven rounds to become the new belt holder.

Pavlik established dominance in round one by backing up Jermain with effective jabs and right hands. Jermain came back big in round two. He hurt Pavlik with a short right hook and quickly followed with a series of power shots that turned the challengers legs to jelly. Pavlik was down with more than a minute left in the round, and it looked like his trip to A.C. was becoming a nightmare. But the kid from Youngstown showed tremendous heart in climbing off the canvas and surviving the round.

Pavlik’s courage never wavered, and he came out hard in the third and re-established dominance with his jab and big right hand. He continued backing Taylor up with his jab, and nailing him with right hands against the ropes. But Kelly’s punch output seemed to slow in the next two stanzas, and the Champion began to come back.

In the fifth and sixth rounds, Jermain started landing crisp left hooks thrown over Kelly’s slow jab. But Taylor’s power did not seem to phase Kelly as much. The challenger was shaking off the blows. It was only a matter of time before Kelly’s forward aggression would pin the champ on the ropes and back into danger.

Heading into the seventh, I had the fight three rounds a piece with Taylor up a point due to the knockdown. The scorecards became irrelevant in this round.

After dominating most of the seventh, Pavlik landed two huge rights that sent Taylor stumbling into the corner. Pavlik let his hands go, and cleanly knocked out Jermain with two solid uppercuts and a crushing left hook.

Referee Steve Smoger jumped in and stopped the assualt, just as the champion crumbled to the canvas. Official time of the stoppage was 2:14.

It was an outstanding fight that saw both guys have their moments. Jermain Taylor fought like a warrior and deserves credit. He took a lot of heat for fighting undersized opponents in a defensive manner, but in the end he stepped up to a daunting Middleweight and went out on his shield. He will be back, hopefully in a rematch that promises to be just as exciting as tonights fight was.

As Larry Merchant said, a star was born tonight. Kelly Pavlik has the ability to go far in this sport. He’s got a highly entertaining style with the skills to back it up. I don’t see him losing his title anytime soon, and I look forward to seeing him fight for many years to come.
