PostSubject: Justin McCully Returns at UFC 76   Mon 23 Jul 2007, 4:31 pm

Tito Ortizís training partner Justin McCully (8-3-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who scored a unanimous-decision win over Antoni Hardonk in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 9 in April, has accepted a slot on the UFC 76 fight card in Anaheim.

An opponent hasnít yet been confirmed, though a name may be announced within the next couple days.

McCully, a Brazilian Jiu-Jistu black belt, made the most of a golden opportunity to earn his ticket into the UFC. When Frank Mir was scratched from his scheduled fight with Hardonk back at the April Fight Night event, McCully quickly stepped in. Luckily, it came in a televised bout ó on a Spike TV national broadcast.

Although the performance was criticized by some unimpressed fans, McCully controlled the fight, neutralized Hardonk and earned some vital name recognition. Quite simply, it was a solid win in a UFC debut.
Although he wasnít really known by casual fans prior to the fight, McCully was an accomplished fighter who debuted in 1997 and posted a 5-3-2 MMA record. After a three-year layoff from 2003-2006, he returned to professional fighting for two more wins ó over Derek Thornton at an Extreme Wars event and over Ruben Villareal in a Valor Fight Championships event ó to run his record to 7-3-2.

Since the win over Hardonk, heís been anxious to get back in the Octagon.

When Jake OíBrien had to pull out of his UFC 72 fight Tom Murphy, McCully offered to step in. Unfortunately, he couldnít get early clearance from a medical suspension (elbow injury) that was issued after his win over Hardonk.

The 31-year-old will now look to make it two UFC wins in a row at UFC 76.

I guess we get a chance to see what he can really do! A good test would be Tim Sylvia!
