One-time top UFC contender Joe Riggs (26-9 MMA, 4-4 UFC) bounced back from a recent string of misfortune and posted a victory over Dan Chambers (9-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) last night at a Hardcore Championship Fighting event in Edmonton, Canada.

The former UFC fighter, who was supposed to compete for the WEC’s middleweight title earlier this year, secured a first-round triangle submission in yesterday’s main event.

Despite being just 24 year old, Riggs is one of the sport’s most-experienced and recognizable fighters. After beginning his career as a heavyweight fighter in the Arizona-based Rage in the Cage organization, Riggs dropped all the way to 170 pounds while competing in the UFC.

However, after a loss to Diego Sanchez at UFC Fight Night 7 — a brutal first-round knockout delivered by a knee blow — Riggs announced his intention of moving to the WEC, which like the UFC, is owned by Zuffa LLC. Riggs was confident he could become the organization’s middleweight champion while helping the WEC emerge into one of MMA’s top promotions.

Unfortunately, Riggs had to pull out of the March 24 WEC title shot on the day of the event with back pain. He later admitted on a radio program that he had sought treatment for addiction to painkillers. And just last summer, he and his wife had to endure to death of their infant child.

It’s been a rough year for the young MMA veteran, but his career now seems headed in the right direction.

With yesterday’s win, he’s now expected to head back to the UFC or WEC.

He has to put together a few wins before he gets back in the UFC, the WEC would be perfect for him right now!!

RIGGS TALKS PRESSURE

Saturday’s Hardcore Championship Fighting billed it the fight that would either “make or break a UFC career, ” pitting Lethbridge up-and-comer Dan Chambers (9-3) versus 8-time UFC veteran Joe Riggs (25-9) in its middleweight main event. Riggs confirmed today on FIGHT NETWORK RADIO that the propaganda for that bout was not over-exaggerated.

“[UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva told me, ‘you lose, you’re done.’ I didn’t take it too seriously, but then they went and ran with it, so I was getting kind of nervous, ” said Riggs.

The former heavyweight managed to quell the anxiety and secure a first round triangle choke on Chambers at the River Cree Casino in Edmonton, Alberta, salvaging a bumpy two-year period that has included back surgery, an ankle infection, and alternate wins and losses, including a turmoil-filled loss to then UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes at Nov. 2005’s UFC 56.

Riggs is expected to return to either the UFC or its second promotion, the WEC, next with no preference to one over the other by the 24-year-old new dad.

“Either or, ” Riggs said. “They’re pretty much the same. I’d like to get back to fighting the best in the world.”
