‘Monsoon tourism’ whatever fancy names the tour operators gives to different travel packages, monsoon time is the right time to behold Kerala. A season when the green land gets greener, the seas more blue, and the people warmer. Travelers flock in from all around the world to enjoy the symphony of falling rain. One can behold the beauty of the slanting fall of rain may be from a tree top stay or from a house boat. Kerala the state getting rain six months through out a year, is the best place to be in on the onset of monsoon.
Monsoon the word means the trade wind and it came from Persian word ‘Mausam’ which means season. It was Hippalus the Greek traveler who discovered the phenomenon. In Kerala from mid may to august is the first phase of monsoon. The second phase fall on September to October. It is the right time for budget cautious tourists, for it is the times of the year when Kerala Travel expenditure goes down.
The thrill of the wait, anticipating the first falls of rain, the fresh smell of the dry earth getting drenched, the pouring of the water from the skies, the line of rain washed vehicles passing away splashing water around, are some of the images that come with the word monsoon. But for a monsoon tourist there is much more to explore in this season.
Some of the best places to be in this season are (1) Munnar from here one gets the panoramic view of the falling rain. (2) Periyar Lake, near dense forest where the beholder is one with the nature while watching the rain from houseboats. (3) Alapuzha where rain is so close to one while riding the backwaters. If one wants more, go to the dense wood of Idukki where you will get a rain named by number, No.40 Rain; a rain falling incessantly like a thread without any break, rain falling like a thin strand of water for a long period of time.
