PostSubject: Max Kellerman a Possible “UFC on HBO” Commentator?   Mon 07 May 2007, 5:09 pm

Max Kellerman a Possible “UFC on HBO” Commentator?

He’s been named a likely candidate by many sources, but based on his comments at this past weekend’s De La Hoya vs. Mayweather mega-fight, Max Kellerman might just be tapped as a commentator for the UFC events on HBO.
Last month, UFC president Dana White confirmed a deal with the subscription-cable giant that would put a handful of UFC events on HBO. Unfortunately, he also confirmed that the UFC’s usual broadcasting team of Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg would not be used for events airing on HBO. Executives from HBO demanded control over the shows’ production, and that included the events’ commentators.

Since the announcement, few names have surfaced as possible replacements for Rogan and Goldberg. But when a name is mentioned, it’s usually Kellerman’s.

You may know Kellerman, a boxing analyst and sports-radio host, from former TV programs such as Around the Horn (ESPN) and I, Max (Fox Sports Net). He’s also an analyst for HBO’s Boxing After Dark and previously held that title with ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. He’s also expected to replace curmudgeon Larry Merchant as HBO’s lead analyst this summer.

Despite a boxing-heavy background, Kellerman is a fan of mixed-martial arts. It was no more evident than this past Saturday. As HBO’s Jim Lampley — a vocal and unabashed UFC antagonist — explained that Oscar De Le Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. were showcasing skills “light years” ahead of those of UFC fighters, Kellerman came to the defense.
Soon after Lampley’s unwarranted statement, Kellerman told the pay-per-view audience:

“I disagree with Jim. I think there are mixed-martial artists who are operating on a very similar skill level in what they do to these fighters, and that’s one of the reasons that the sport’s becoming very popular.“
Honestly, Kellerman’s the type of guy who would probably best connect with a UFC audience. The 33-year-old is young, sharp, energetic and — do I dare say? — hip. He’s not a typical crusty old “boxing guy,” and unlike many of his colleagues, he doesn’t see boxing vs. MMA as an either-or proposition. He’s stated numerous times he’s a fan of both.

Seeing how he’s already under contract with HBO, and considering his popularity among sports fans in the UFC’s target demographic, Kellerman would seem a logical choice not only for HBO executives, but also UFC officials. In fact, he’s just the type of talent on which the UFC and HBO could find common ground.

At this point, nothing’s official. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kellerman as one part of the “UFC on HBO” broadcasting team once first event rolls around.

as long as he doesn't start comparing fighters standup to boxers, he should be an OKAY announcer.

Well, as long as he doesn't have his thick Staten Island accent going, for awhile you couldn't tell then he just quit trying to hide it

Yep he is the one that was living with Max Kellerman's brother and killed him by hitting him in the back of the head with a hammer several times!
