Matt Serra and Matt Hughes Named Coaches of The Ultimate Fighter 6

Recently crowned UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra and former longtime champ Matt Hughes will be the coaches on the upcoming sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter.

UFC president Dana White made the announcement at last night’s UFC 70 broadcast.

The Ultimate Fighter 6 begins taping in May, and as UFCjunkie.com first reported, the season will feature 16 welterweight fighters vying for a UFC contract. The series will air on Spike TV with a season debut in September.

In addition to their years of MMA experience, Serra and Hughes bring a public feud to the show. In recent interviews, Serra has called Hughes a “disrespectful dick,” among other things. For the most part, though, Hughes has taken the high road.

This will actually be Hughes’ second stint as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter. He and Rich Franklin headed teams on the second season of the show.

Serra appeared on the show as a cast member on the recent “comeback” fourth season, winning the welterweight division to earn a title shot with Georges St. Pierre earlier this month. He scored one of the biggest upsets in UFC history at the UFC 69 main event and became the first cast member of the show to win a title.

Although White stated two weeks ago that Serra and Hughes would fight in September, yesterday’s announcement could alter the schedule. After all, the UFC would be wise to use the weekly episodes of The Ultimate Fighter 6 to plug a future pay-per-view event headlined by the two coaches. And if the show doesn’t debut until September, it’d be at least December or January before the series concluded and the coaches would be ready to fight.

Then again, would the UFC shelf two of its biggest names for the better part of a year for the sake of its reality show? Well, yeah, I guess they would.
